I recently re-visited a natural playground designed by LandCurrent for infants and toddlers in Salem, Oregon. The play area was going to be visited by a Training Specialist from Zero to Three (R), who is writing a technical report for the Early Head Start National Resource Center. Her visit was the reason I wanted to see this play garden again.
While there the director of the child and development center gave me some great new insights. The most popular place within the play garden she said is the dirt pit. How wonderful that something so simple and so inexpensive can give the kids the greatest joy. Indeed kids love dirt! And not only do they love dirt recent research also shows that playing in dirt works as an anti-depressant and especially girls should be allowed to dig in the dirt more often.
